Ricos tacos

Ricos tacos really isn’t much to look at. But what it lacks in decore, it more then makes up for in both taste and value. People come from all over the 5 bourghs and beyond to sample the delicous traditional mexican fare at ricos.

My personal favorites are the $1.25 spicy pork tacos, and the $3.50 natchos with queso blanco. Located on 52nd street and 5th ave in brooklyn, ny this is one you shouldn’t miss!

London- The Red Lion Cellar Bar

By editor | November 15, 2008

48 Parliament Street

Westminster

The Red Lion Cellar bar is a truly unique experience. Right down the way from the halls of power at Downing Street the Red Lion Cellar Bar is on of the oldest bars in the world, dating back to the 1300’s. Their is is something very satisfying about drinking in a bar that’s twice as old as your home country.

The bar is also a regular hangout form British members of Parliament, due to its close proximity. TV’s regularly show legislative sessions so the MP’s know when to put their beers done and hustle back for a vote.

Food is standard pub grub and prices are a little high, but for the atmosphere and the history, its worth it.

Charisma Arts

Its 8:30am, the D train is packed as usual. There is scarcely room to breath, but that’s not the reason my chest is tightening up. To my right is a short, dark haired, dark skin woman, who looks to be of Hispanic descent … I could describe how gorgeous she is, but I’m sure I wouldn’t do her justice. Directly in front of me stands a 5’10” blonde who is 5’5” of legs, and is clearly speaking Russian to her friend, we catch eye contact for a split second, her blue eyes are amazing.  But it doesn’t end there, from my cramped position I can see at least 10 different types of beautiful women, welcome to my daily commute.

In an environment such as this, you may think that meeting people and socializing would be easy. That perception really couldn’t be further from the truth, in fact, in the 2 years I’ve been living in Brooklyn, I have yet to approach anyone during my commute.  The odd thing is I’m not anti-social, and I’m far from being shy, so why is it that socializing with strangers is not a daily occurrence?

I have been searching for an answer to that question for some time now, and at first all I found were more questions. Social interactions are complicated, how many times have you spoken to a person and felt awkward? Or insecure? Or perhaps you thought the interaction went well, just to find out later that the other person didn’t share your enthusiasm? These things happen all the time, and not just to the socially inept, they happen to charming, quick witted, skilled conversationalists all the time.

It can become exceedingly frustrating being in these types of situations, and the lack of quality guidance on this subject is staggering. I have looked high and low for any source of decent information on the workings of personal interactions, and luckily I have found some one who knows what he is talking about. Wayne Elise, and the staff at Charisma Arts have been a valuable resource to me, the materials on their site provided me with detailed insights, discussions, and examples of positive interactions.

Charisma Arts is mainly centered around male to female interactions, but the methodology can improve all interactions. If you are in need of serious social skills, or if you’re a naturally social person who just needs to brush up a bit, check out the link below. The team at Charisma arts has all kinds of great information for you, from videos, to pod casts, and tons of reading materials. I have learned a great deal from CA, I hope you can get as much out of them as I have.

Philly- Mad Mex

By editor | November 7, 2008

After a long week of grad classes, my cohorts and I like to grab a drink at Mad Mex.  We can walk right from class into a world of fun and put the stress behind us.  This place has great margaritas – frozen or on the rocks – that come in 3 different sizes that go by the names Little Butt, Sweet, and Big Azz.  Mad Mex also carries a variety of specialty margaritas along with a moderate selection of beers.  After a couple of drinks, ordering so munchies is always the way to go.  They have Pickadippa where you can choose any combination of 3 dips from regular salsa to a pineapple-habanero salsa or cheese dip, guacamole and even hummus.  Everything is freshly made and served with an abundance of chips.  If you are looking for something more substantial, than look no further to the rest of their menu that includes wings, salads, soups, and Mexican favorites.  I personally love the Spicy Mad Mex Burrito made with tofu.  It is the perfect combination of spicy that I crave.  If you aren’t a tofu lover, you can choose from chicken, steak, shrimp, or portobello.  This is an easy spot to go with my vegetarian friends who will be able to find something on the menu while meat eaters will go home happy too.

Nothing is worse than having great food but in a poor atmosphere.  Well you won’t find that here.  Mad Mex has outdoor seating, which is always a plus on the warmer days and nights.  Inside you have the bar and some nice sized booths for larger groups.  This place plays funky music and the decor is artistic.  Mad Mex is a little but hidden since it sits behind some buildings but is situated between Walnut and Sansom.  I highly recommend heading out to Mad Mex for amazing margaritas and a unique menu.  And if you are there on a Sunday afternoon, look for my classmates and I after our weekend class just kicking back.

Search For Flights, Hotels and Cars here on TLS!

By matt | September 2, 2008

Ladies and Gents, I’d like to announce that The Local Spots has begun a new affiliate partnership with Cheapoair.com . If you notice on the right hand side of our page, you now have the option of searching for cheap flights, hotels, and car rentals right from TLS. I have personally researched the site, and compared thier prices to the other “big sites” and I’ve found them to be consistently cheaper, not to mention you would be helping us pull in some much needed revenue, as we have no other means of supporting ourselves here at TLS.  I personally have four baby turtles, who are in need of food. You wouldn’t deny them would you? Who doesn’t like turtles anyway? In case you were wondering, I named them leo, donny, mike, and raph … and yes I dress them up like ninjas on occasion.

Indianapolis: Nicky Blaine’s

By editor | August 29, 2008

If Frank Sinatra were alive and hung out in Indianapolis, he would hang out at Nicky Blaines. Located right downtown on the circle, Nicky Blaines is a basement bar that drips with old school charm. From the jazz band, to the leather couches to the guy who walks around lighting your cigarette for you, it sometimes has a surreal feel, like you’ve walked onto the set of a movie.

Nicky Blaines was voted one of Esquires best bars in America, which is the only endorsement I need. Its the perfect place for a date, scotch and cigars with the guys or just to sit back and experience the cool that is Nicky Blaines. The best part? It’s the Midwest and everything’s cheap, you can get a cocktail for six bucks.

Washington DC, The Center Cafe

The Center Cafe is located smack in the middle of the main hall in Washington DC’s Union Station. The Center Cafe is without a doubt, the finest train station bar I have ever had the pleasure of drinking at. As fellow business travelers I know all of you reading this spend a lot of time in train station and airport bars. This can be a painful experience, but for all the no name, no fun bars and Dick Clarks Rock and Roll Grill’s that have to be endured, there is a great place like the center cafe.

The Cafe is a great place just to look at, its a huge circle with a bar on the floor and additional seating on a second floor. It sits right in the middle of the busy concourse and is perfect for people watching. They have a full menu where you can get several appetizers for under ten bucks. The best part? Cheap ass drinks! You can get a scotch here for five bucks, train station bars are know for being overpriced, this is the rare example of a cheap, yet classy and fun place to while a way a few hours waiting for that next amtrak for home.

Washington DC- The Looking Glass Lounge

By editor | August 21, 2008

 3634 Georgia Ave NW

The Looking Glass Lounge, which opened a few months ago, is a fantastic albeit oddly located new bar. The LGL is on Georgia ave. a block south of the Georgia Petworth metro, which for those who know DC can be a bit of a bad area. None the less LGL is a classy establishment and patrons should not be scared off for the area (which in reality is not unsafe, just a bit unsightly)

The Lounge features a full dining room, two bars, one of which has outside seating, and a great selection of beers on tap. The menu is fantastic as well, I recommend the nachos with vegetarian chili, they are not to be missed. They have bar trivia on Thursdays and drinks specials every weekend.

I have whiled a way a few hours in here and this is the kind of place that’s perfect for wasting time. Its relaxed, quiet and inviting atmosphere makes The Looking Glass Lounge a great place for a few drinks to wind down after work.
